(FM) - At least five persons were killed after a petrol tanker rammed into a car in Nigeria's southwestern state of Oyo on Monday, local authorities said.
The tanker which was fully loaded with petrol at the time of the incident experienced brake failure and rammed into a car before plunging into a ditch on the new Ife-Ibadan road in the Egbeda local government area of Oyo, said Uche Chukwurah, a commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state.
A total of five people were in the car, Chukwurah told reporters in a press briefing in Ibadan, the state capital of Oyo state.
"The whole people inside the car were crushed to death and nobody was rescued alive," the road safety officer said, adding the petrol tanker did not explode in the accident, but men of the fire service were at the scene to prevent fire outbreak in the area.
Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad condition of roads, and reckless driving.
