Baghdad,FMNews - Three Iraqi soldiers were killed in an attack by the Islamic State militant group in eastern Iraq's Diyala province late Sunday. IS militants opened fire on Iraqi army posts in the Udim area, about 60 kilometers north of the provincial capital Bakuba. Two other soldiers were also injured in this attack.
Despite repeated military operations in Diyala, IS militants still hide in rugged areas near the border with Iran. They extend from the western part of Diyala to the mountainous region of Himrin.
However, the situation has improved slightly after Iraqi security forces defeated IS militants across the country in late 2017. The remnants of IS terrorists are now spread across the desert and rough terrain. They have been carrying out guerilla attacks against security forces and civilians.
