ANGUL:: Hundreds of farmers took out a rally in Chhendipada today demanding their block should be declared as a drought area among others.Khariff crop in Chhendipada block area has been completely destroyed due to the scanty rainfall this year.
Led by former mahila congress chief Sasmita Behera and district congress president Biplab jena among other district and state congress leaders, the farmers submitted a memorandum addressed to the chief minister to the local Tahasildar.
The farmers have alleged that there is no paddy crop this year due to scanty rainfall in Chhendipada block in this khariff season. About 90 per cent of the population of this area depend on agriculture . While there was a deficit rainfall between June to August the irrigation facilities came to know use for the farmers.
All the minor irrigation projects in the area failed to function while 41 out of 81 lift irrigation points are defunct. Those are functioning are also not in full strength,farmers allege.The memorandum demanded the block should be declared as drought area,loan waiver to farmers,rupees 6,000 monetary assistance to each farmer per month,readmission to the farmer’s children in the school among others.
Sasmita Behera, said ,”The farmers have bore the brunt of the scanty rainfall this year in Chhendipada block.The state government has not so far has come out plan for ravi crops.The farmers started own paddy crop by incurring loan are in distress”
"The agony of the people due to crop loss is extremely high and the state government is yet to reach the people.If there will be no help from the government we will go for indefinie agitation in the days ahead",Sasmita said.
