CHUCAGO: A 42-year-old woman and several others, injured in Chicago, police said.
Police said that atleast five people have been shot, one fatally, in a shooting in West Pullman in Chicago, Illinois.
The shooting which happened on Saturday night left a woman, 42, killed and four others, including a 15-year-old girl, injured, Chicago police said.
The group was outside walking towards their vehicles about 9:40 p.m. when someone inside another car opened fire, shooting multiple rounds in their direction.
The woman, who died in the incident, was shot in the arm and armpit, police said. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The teen girl was struck in the arm and transported in fair condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.
The other victims are a man, 32, who was shot in the face and another man, 38, who was struck in the stomach. A third man, 22, was suffered gunshot wounds to the arm and leg, according to police.
The US state of Chicago has launched an initiative to tackle the rising gun violence in one of America’s largest cities.
At least 430 people died in at least 915 shootings that took place across the United States last week, according to ABC News and the Gun Violence Archive.
Gun violence is rife across the United States. In the first five months of 2021, gunfire killed more than 8,100 people in the US, accounting for about 54 lives lost per day, according to a Washington Post analysis of data from the Gun Violence Archive.
This year, the number of casualties, along with the overall number of shootings that have killed or injured at least one person, exceeds those of the first five months of 2020, which finished as the deadliest year of gun violence in at least two decades, according to Washington Post data.
